About 100 people and businesses were robbed in Baltimore for the week ending Sept. 27, a spike of more than 60 percent compared to the prior week yet down from the same time period last year.

Eight of the robberies occurred downtown or in the Inner Harbor, while the entire Southwestern District reported just three robberies.

The same statistics show robberies for the year are down 12 percent compared to last year.

The Northern District saw the most of any of the Police Department's nine police districts, with 21. Eight of those robberies appear to have occurred in a single incident in the 5900 block of York Road on Sept. 22. Additional information was not immediately available.

In an email to residents on Sept. 28, Maj. Kim Burrus wrote that she had observed a pattern of robberies in Charles Village and Old Goucher, and Waverly. In the Waverly incidents, Burrus wrote that a group of male and female juveniles wearing orange polo shirts and khakis were assaulting people and taking cell phones in the 3200 block of Ellerslie Ave. and the 3400 block of Old York Road.

The Northeastern District saw 18 robberies. In an email to residents, Maj. Richard Worley said cell phones were being taken and bus stops "are the location where thieves are targeting victims."

"If you drive past a BUS STOP or are sitting at the light near a BUS STOP, please look at the people waiting for the bus and make sure they are safe," Worley wrote. He said police arrested two people who attempted to rob a 7-Eleven at Belair Road and Nicholas Avenue.
