Seafood distributors move to bigger space

Two subsidiaries of Stanley Pearlman Enterprises plan to move into their own facility next year, a new 88,000-square-food seafood distribution facility in Jessup.

The companies, NAFCO and Congressional Seafood Co., process and distribute seafood on the the East Coast, with delivery to supermarkets and restaurants respectively. In the last five years, both companies have grown, with Congressional's customer base expanding from 200 to more than 300 clients, creating a need for more space, said Congressional Seafood spokeswoman Kelly Morris.

The businesses currently lease about 33,000 square feet in the Maryland Food Center Authority's seafood market, said Angela Schmidt, the center's director of finance. The new building, located on 5.5 acres of land previously owned by the center at 7775 S. Chesapeake Bay Court, is a joint venture between Pearlman and developer Merritt Properties.

The new project includes 8,000 square feet of office space and has enough space to allow for a future 18,000 square foot expansion. It is expected to cost roughly $9 million and open in February, Morris said.
