O, say can you sing? [Letter]

September 13, 2014

Baltimore is rightfully celebrating its role in the War of 1812 and the creation of our national anthem ("Our flag was still there,http://www.baltimoresun.com/features/bs-ae-defenders-of-1812-20140906%2C0%2C6875397.story Sept. 6). Seemingly, dozens of large events are planned. But in how many of these events will the assembled throngs be encouraged to actually sing "The Star-Spangled Banner?

Perhaps people feel incapable of singing it, save for a single syllable loudly proclaimed at local sporting events. Instead, they stand idly as the anthem, our anthem, is "performed." I suggest that we, the people of Baltimore, take back our anthem and become "The City That Sings The Anthem," every proud syllable of it.
