President Barack Obama will visit Baltimore on Friday for a fundraiser intended to help Democrats defend their Senate majority, a White House official said today.

Obama, who last spent time in the city in May 2013, will attend a fundraiser to benefit the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Details of the event were not immediately available.

The president has stepped up fundraising this year ahead of the November midterm elections, including for vulnerable Senate incumbents. Republicans need to pick up six seats to take control of the Senate for the first time since 2006.

Neither of Maryland's senators, Barbara A. Mikulski or Ben Cardin, are up for election this year.

Obama last visited Baltimore on May 17, 2013, as part of a tour to promote his jobs agenda. He delivered an address on the economy from a manufacturing plant in the Carroll-Camden Industrial Area, sat in on a pre-kindergarten class at Moravia Park Elementary School and visited a workforce development program called the Center for Urban Families.

But the president is likely to be far less visible on this trip. The fundraiser is the only event noted by the White House.
