A 32-year-old Baltimore man is charged with fatally stabbing his girlfriend when she was nine months pregnant with his daughter, Baltimore County police and prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said that Kenneth Walter Worrell III of Baltimore was unhappy that Summer Shemida Smith, 33, was having the child. Smith's due date was less than a week away when she was killed.

Worrell is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Smith. The Baltimore County state's attorney's office is reviewing the case to see whether additional charges can be filed in the death of the unborn child.

His attorney argued for his release, saying Worrell had no criminal record and had ties to the community. He is a longshoreman at the port of Baltimore.

The judge denied bail. Worrell is being held at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

Smith's mother found her unconscious with multiple stab wounds in the basement of her home in Rosedale on June 20, police wrote in charging documents. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one answered at her home on Tuesday.

When detectives interviewed Worrell, police said, he told them he spoke to Smith on the phone the day of her death but had not seen her in person at all this year.

Detectives took a swab of Worrell's saliva for his DNA and searched his vehicles.

In Worrell's Volkswagen Jetta, police said, they found a bank receipt with two small blood stains. They later determined they matched Smith's blood, they said.
