Police aren't soldiers and they don't need military equipment [Letter]

August 28, 2014

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake's attempt to justify the police department's possession of military equipment to WBAL on the grounds that there might be a terrorist attack is ridiculous.

The people to deal with such an attack are the National Guard, not the police. The function of the police is to deal with ordinary law enforcement, and they can do that best by remembering they are civilians and a part of the community they serve, not by making believe they are soldiers at war.
