The Maryland Jockey Club on Tuesday announced the addition of 10 more stakes to the Laurel Park fall schedule. The Maryland Horse Breeders Association has inserted five Maryland-bred and/or Maryland-sired races into the mix: the All Brandy Stakes (Sept. 6), Jameela Stakes (Sept.27), Jennings Handicap (Dec. 6), Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship (Dec. 26) and Maryland Juvenile Futurity (Dec. 27). Each will be contested with $125,000 for Maryland-bred and sired runners and $100,000 for Maryland-bred horses. The Sept. 13 card will feature five $60,000 Virginia-bred and/or Virginia-sired races scheduled for the turf: the Jamestown Stakes, Punch Lunch Stakes, Oakley Stakes, Bert Allen Stakes and Brookmeade Stakes. Live racing returns to the major Maryland tracks on Sept. 5, after a 12-week break.

Game time for ACC/Big Ten Challenge announced
In its first game representing the Big Ten Conference in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Maryland will face Virginia at 9:15 p.m. Dec. 3. Virginia is ranked No. 7 in ESPN.com's men's preseason top-25 poll. The Atlantic Coast Conference and Big Ten have split the past two events, winning six Challenge games apiece in 2012 and 2013.
McArdle is MLL's Rookie of the Year; Fletcher in top 3
Florida Launch attackman Kieran McArdle was named Major League Lacrosse's Rookie of the Year after setting league records for points and goals by a first-year player. Rochester Rattlers attackman Jordan Wolf finished second in the voting, and New York Lizards rookie defenseman Joe Fletcher (Loyola Maryland) came in third. McArdle, a former St. John's star, had 49 points (34 goals and 15 assists) despite missing two of the Launch's 14 games.
College: Alex Kahoe, who won five championships as a player at Maryland and was named to the NCAA 25th Anniversary All-Time Women's Lacrosse team, was named head coach at Saint Joseph's. Kahoe was most recently the girls varsity coach at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. Kahoe served as an assistant coach at five Division I programs — Maryland, Duke, Vermont, Delaware and Pennsylvania — from 2000 to 2013. … Former Baltimore Bayhawk Trevor Tierney has rejoined his father, Bill, on the Denver staff as volunteer assistant coach. Trevor Tierney served under his father with the Pioneers from 2010 to 2013, including the first two as his first assistant coach. Tierney won the 2005 Major League Lacrosse championship with the Bayhawks.
Wizards to play Knicks at noon on Christmas Day
In a sign of the Washington Wizards' rising profile, the NBA has scheduled the team to play at noon on Christmas Day against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. It will be the first time the Wizards have played on Christmas since 2008, when they fell to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA has made Christmas its marquee regular-season day in recent years, featuring its most popular teams in nationally televised broadcasts. The 2014-15 regular-season schedule will be released tonight.

Orioles: The Orioles announced the promotions of four members of the club's front-office staff. Tripp Norton has been promoted to director of baseball operations, Kevin Buck to director of team travel, Sarah Gelles to director of baseball analytics, and Bill Wilkes to assistant director of major league administration and professional scouting.
College field hockey: Towson was picked to finish last in the Colonial Athletic Association in a vote of the league's head coaches. Delaware, the defending regular-season champion, was picked to finish first.
Men's college soccer: The Army-Navy game at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., on Nov. 7 will be broadcast on the American Sports Network, the Patriot League announced.
Men's college water polo: Johns Hopkins announced the hiring of Ross Schofield as its new assistant coach. Schofield played for the Blue Jays, graduating last year.
