Pro-Formance Fishing

Tuesday, Aug. 5: Pro-Formance Fishing Team, affiliated with B.A.S.S. and Maryland Bass Nation, is seeking additional members and will hold an introductory meeting at 6 p.m. at The Greene Turtle in Edgewater. The club is primarily based in Glen Burnie but has membership throughout the region. It fishes 12 club tournaments a year and also participates in MBN and other tournaments. It is seeking boaters but can accommodate a few riders. It welcomes new anglers who want to learn how to fish for bass competitively in a friendly environment. Charles Street 12

Saturday, Aug. 9: The point-to-point running race takes runners down Charles Street, now a National Scenic Byway, from the shops at Kenilworth in Towson to Power Plant Live in Baltimore. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Children's Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children's Hospital. Register at

Hunter safety course

Saturday, Aug. 9: Registration will be held from 9a.m. to noon for the Baltimore County Game & Fish Protective Association's hunter-safety course on club grounds at 3400 Northwind Road in Carney. Classes will be Wednesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 13, 14, 20 and 21 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The test will be Aug. 23 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Information: Butch Janeczek, 443-695-2565.

Catching poachers

Aug. 12: Timothy Bowman, program manager for the Maritime Law Enforcement Information Network, will speak at a meeting of the Northwest Chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association. He'll discuss how the new maritime surveillance and reporting system is used to help catch poachers and Search & Rescue on the Chesapeake Bay. The meeting will be at the Patapsco Council No. 1960 Knights of Columbus Hall, 1010 Frederick Road in Catonsville. Use the Beaumont Avenue (side) entrance. Memorial 5K run

Sept. 13: The seventh-annual Jessica Meredith Jacobsen Memorial 5K Run presented by the Father O'Neill Council #4011 Knights of Columbus will start and end at Immaculate Conception Church in Towson. The run will support the House of Ruth, Fr. O'Neil Charities and the ICS Tuition Assistance Fund. Information:


Nov. 1: The Orioles, OriolesREACH and manager Buck Showalter and his wife, Angela, are joining forces with KidsPeace to host the fifth annual Trick-or-Trot 5K/1-Mile Walk, a Halloween-themed race to benefit children in foster care. The race will begin and end at Oriole Park. Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will be awarded for top runners, age-group winners, fundraising teams and best costumes. The registration fee is $35 through Oct. 27 and $40 on race day. Hurd 5K Run

Nov. 8: The sixth-annual Heather L. Hurd 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk will take place at 9 a.m. at Harford Community College in Bel Air. The race honors the memory of Heather L.
