A 17-year-old boy was critically injured Saturday after crashing an ATV in Edgewater, Anne Arundel County police said.

The driver, who has not been identified, was traveling north on Welches Drive toward Daisies Circle shortly before 5:30 p.m. when he started to brake and drove off the road into grass.

The vehicle's left-front tire struck the tongues of two small trailers that were stored there, and the teen was thrown onto the roadway, according to police. He was not wearing a helmet and was not licensed to drive the unregistered vehicle, they said.

The victim was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, and was in critical condition Saturday night, police said.
