A 71-year-old man was struck and killed by a car in Essex after he stepped into its path Friday night, Baltimore County police said.

Police said the crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. at Back River Neck and Poles roads. The victim, Willard Patrick Hagy Jr., of Essex, was struck by a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon. The driver remained at the scene, police said.

Hagy was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police did not indicate what may have contributed to the fatal incident, and said it is being reviewed by the Crash Team. The team's report will be reviewed by the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office, as is routine. The driver was not identified by police.
