Maryland linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil named to Butkus Award watch list

Maryland outside linebacker Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil has been named to the watch list for the Butkus Award, given annually to the top linebacker in college football.

Cudjoe-Virgil, a Baltimore native who went to Towson High, had 18 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception in six games last year before suffering a season-ending pectoral injury.

He will depended on heavily to help Maryland replace outside linebacker Marcus Whitfield, who had 52 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss and nine sacks last year.

In all, there were 51 players named to the Butkus Award watch list. Cudjoe-Virgil was one of just three outside linebackers from the Big Ten.
