When Miguel Gonzalez is activated from DL depends on Orioles' use of bullpen Sunday

June 15, 2014|By Alejandro Zuniga | The Baltimore Sun

Whether or not the Orioles use two long relievers today will determine when right-hander Miguel Gonzalez is activated from the 15-day disabled list -- and on what day he’ll make his first major league start since straining his groin.

If right-hander Chris Tillman has a long outing this afternoon against the Toronto Blue Jays, Gonzalez will be activated to start Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said during his pregame news conference today.

Otherwise, Gonzalez could be reinstated sooner to be available out of the bullpen.

The Orioles have had to rely on both of their long relievers in the same game recently. After a 2 1/3-inning outing by Ubaldo Jimenez last Sunday, right-hander Brad Brach and left-hander T.J. McFarland combined for the remaining 6 2/3 frames in the club’s loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Once Gonzalez returns, one of the Orioles' starters may be used as a long reliever, Showalter said.

Here are some other notes from Showalter’s pregame news conference:

* First baseman Chris Davis is taking a scheduled day off today. Steve Pearce will play first base and bat fifth. Showalter said Davis could be a “nice weapon off the bench,” if needed.

* Showalter hopes third baseman Manny Machado’s five-game suspension for throwing his bat at Athletics pitcher Fernando Abad is reduced to two. The manager referenced similar incidents in the past as precedent for a lighter ban.

* Umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, whom Orioles first baseman Adam Jones inadvertently knocked over Saturday, was scratched from today’s game with a head injury sustained on the fall. Wendelstedt will be replaced by Jerry Layne behind home plate, and Adam Hamari will be the first base umpire.
