Don't let distillers set Md. DUI policies [Letter]

June 09, 2014

In his letter ("Mandatory ignition interlock would save lives — period," June 5), Keith S. Franz hits the nail on the head.

We don't have a practical solution for distracted driving yet, apart from telling people not to do it. Drunk driving is another matter — ignition interlocks have been proven to reduce drunk driving accidents. Police, legislators in most states and safety organizations appear to know this since interlocks are becoming more widely used.

Only the liquor lobby (in other words, the American Beverage Institute) thinks otherwise, since every person who has had an interlock installed is a lost customer.

Is Maryland seriously going to let an association of distillers and bar owners influence highway safety policy?
