Baseball is in Palumbo's blood. That's why in 2012 when he got an offer he couldn't refuse, he didn't.

Palumbo interviewed for and accepted the position of head baseball coach at Archbishop Spalding, and took over from the outgoing coach — his dad, Jeff.

"I knew this was a great situation and a great place for me to be," said Palumbo, a graduate of DeMatha and Maryland, both of which he played baseball for. "Coaching is something I really wanted to do, and this was where I wanted to be."

In his first year, the team went 13-15. This year it was 24-4, finished the season as the top-ranked team by The Baltimore Sun, and won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title.

"The difference for our team this year was that we had the right mix of youth and experience," Palumbo said. "It took me awhile to bring the culture to where I wanted it, but everybody bought in this year. I think that's why we were so successful."

Palumbo says he knew early on that this team could be special.

"We played in a tournament in Florida, and we went 5-0 and beat good teams from Tennessee, North Carolina, and — believe it or not — Toronto, Canada," he said. "When I saw that we could play at a high level against these teams, I knew that was a great sign."
