A three-foot sinkhole has shut down eastbound traffic on U.S. Route 50 in Annapolis Wednesday, and the road may remained closed into Thursday's morning rush, Maryland State police said.

The sinkhole, which closed traffic during Wednesday's evening rush hour, was located across the right lane and second lane at MD Route 665, according to Cpl. David Johnson of the state police.

"It has shut down eastbound 50 at 665, and it will probably be shut down all night," Johnson said.

Engineers and the State Highway Administration are on the scene, Johnson said.

Maryland State Highway officials tweeted Wednesday night that the highway may remain closed into Thursday morning.
