A Montgomery County teen died Monday evening after getting caught in a riptide while swimming in Ocean City, officials said.

The 18-year-old victim, who has not been identified, died at Atlantic General Hospital, Ocean City police said.

At around 4:30 p.m., three swimmers who went into the ocean in the area of 137th street got stuck in the riptide, according to a news release from the Town of Ocean City. An Ocean City Beach Patrol rescue technician was able to rescue two of the swimmers, but the third could not be immediately located.

Eventually, a team of 15 rescue swimmers discovered the teenager, who was treated on scene before being taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at around 6:30 p.m., police said.
