A skewed view of the Baltimore School for the Arts [Letter]

As a graduate of the Baltimore School for the Arts, I thought Patricia Schultheis' recent commentary about the school was totally wrong ("Who is responsible for Jabril?" May 19).

I did the hard work needed to succeed in academics and arts, staying in school longer than any other high schooler. Yet I was able to graduate and become an upstanding citizen. One individual's experience should not be used to characterize the whole school.

I had fellow students who were blind or with disabilities, yet they made it because they put their heart and soul into that school. People who look at the school and blame it for how they are just making excuses.

We all have the power to put forth our best, and at the end of the day we have to look in the mirror, where no one else is there but the person you see in front of you.

I had two choices when I got accepted into BSFA — either there or my zone school. I made it in. I stayed late for coach classes, stayed even later to work on projects. I cannot believe Ms. Schultheis can bash a school that continues to do a lot for kids with talent.
