Art exhibits

The Howard County Arts Council hosts the exhibits, "Resident Visual Artists Exhibit 2014" and "Weaving Outside the Box: Exploring Idioms in Fiber" through June 27 at 8510 High Ridge Road in Ellicott City. A free reception in conjunction with the Columbia Festival of the Arts will be held June 19 and includes entertainment by All County Improv at 6:30 p.m. and a Resident Artists' Open Studios from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The public is also invited to attend a Portfolio Open House hosted by resident artists from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Information: 410-313-2787.

English conversation

The Miller branch of the Howard County Public Library, 9421 Frederick Road, offers "Let's Get Together: English Conversation Club," a chance for those for whom English is a second language to practice speaking and understanding English in a group setting. The club meets at 7:45 p.m. Wednesdays. Information: 410-313-1950.

Ellicott City Senior Center

These events take place at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, 410-313-1421:

Blood pressure screenings Stop in from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays for free blood pressure readings by a registered nurse. Information: 410-313-1425.

Concert The ShowTime Singers perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Free, but tickets are required.

Music with Al Callahan at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 21. Free.

Cabaret luncheon and show with Leo & Diane at noon Friday, May 23. Cost is $15.

Nutrition counseling Rona Martiyan, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, will be available for half-hour private consultations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 21. Call for appointment.

Line Dancing with Mary McCormick Class meets at 3:30 p.m. Thursdays through June 12. Call for fee.

Also at the center:

Billiards 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays.

Gentle beginning yoga Classes will be held at 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Mah-jongg 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays.

Needlework Club 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays.

Movies/documentaries 1 p.m. Fridays.

Painting Together 10 a.m. to noon Mondays; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays.

Piano lessons Tuesdays through Thursdays. Cost is $30 per half-hour session.

Zumba Gold Classes meet at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
