What's wrong with nonsectarian prayer? [Letter]

May 15, 2014

I feel sorry for anyone who has to alienate others by overtly Christianizing prayer before Carroll Board of County Commissioners meetings ("Carroll commissioners resume opening with Christian prayer," May 14).

Are these people so fearful or dependent that they have to speak the name of Jesus before feeling strong enough to do the work of the board? What's wrong with using "God" or "Master of the Universe" or similar invocations which might create a feeling of bonding and cooperation instead of divisiveness and discomfort?

Chief Justice John Roberts' Supreme Court has been browbeaten by conservatives into supporting this flagrant disregard for separating church and state, and I wouldn't be surprised if he found it necessary to re-think his decision.
