Maryland State Police on Thursday identified the driver who was killed Monday in a late-morning crash on Interstate 95 in the Patapsco River Bridge area, when the vehicle went over a bridge embankment, landed in a park and caught fire.

Police CRASH team and officials from the Golden Ring Barrack said that Nathaniel White, 73, of Takoma Park was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. He was the sole occupant of a Ford truck that was towing a trailer.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that around 11:30 a.m., the truck was traveling southbound on I-95 when it separated from the trailer. The truck struck the bridge embankment on the right side, continued over the embankment and landed in a park below, where it became engulfed in flames.

The trailer remained on I-95, blocking two traffic lanes, police said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, police said.
