The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will announce the school system's new superintendent at Wednesday's scheduled meeting, officials said.

The state's fifth largest school system has chosen its new leader from three finalists, including two that are in-house — George Arlotto, school system Chief of Staff and former Associate Superintendent for School Performance; Maureen McMahon, Assistant Superintendent for Advanced Studies and Programs; and current Trenton (N.J.) Superintendent Francisco Durán.

All three finalists declined comment Tuesday.

School board president Teresa Milio Birge said the school system and the candidate have reached an agreement, adding that "the final language of the contract needs to be worked out."

The school system seeks to fill a position vacated last year when then seven-year Superintendent Kevin Maxwell left for a similar position in Prince George's County. Mamie Perkins, appointed 11-month interim superintendent amid Maxwell's departure, declined to apply for the permanent position.

The new superintendent is slated to begin a four-year term on July 1, officials said.
