Firefighters responded to an alarm at the three-story building in 500 block of S. Caton Ave. at 3:14 a.m.

After nearly an hour of fighting the blaze, which was billowing heavy smoke and flames, firefighters were able to bring it under control and enter the building, where they found the man dead on the second floor of the vacant home.

The man, who had not been identified as of Monday morning, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m.
