Maryland men's basketball assistant Scott Spinelli is in "serious negotiations" to become an assistant under new Boston College coach Jim Christian, Terps coach Mark Turgeon said Monday.
"Nothing's final yet," Turgeon said.
Spinelli did not respond phone calls and text messages from The Baltimore Sun.
Spinelli, who came with Turgeon from Texas A&M, grew up outside Boston and recruits heavily in New England. He was instrumental in the Terps landing Jake Layman out of high school and bringing in Evan Smotrycz when he transferred from Michigan.
Christian, who took over at Boston College for Steve Donahue and coached previously at Ohio University, is scheduled to be introduced at a news conference Tuesday.
Christian also coached at TCU in Fort Worth while Spinelli was at Texas A&M with Turgeon. Both played collegiately at Boston University, with Christian transferring to Rhode Island the year Spinelli joined the BU program.
The possible departure of Spinelli could continue an overhaul of Turgeon’s original Maryland staff that began in November when Dalonte Hill resigned after his second drunk driving arrest.
After Hill resigned, Turgeon promoted basketball operations director Dustin Clark to a fulltime assistant coaching position and named former Terps star Juan Dixon as his special assistant.
Boston College's contact with Spinelli was first reported in The Boston Globe.
