Md. minimum wage unlikely to affect manufacturing [Letter]

March 25, 2014

Letter writer David L. Cahn of Baltimore ("The negative consequences of a minimum wage hike are already visible," March 23) should know that the average hourly wage for manufacturing jobs in the Baltimore area is $19.45. For distribution (warehouse) jobs, it is $14.00.

That kind of makes his argument against raising the minimum wage — that manufacturing and distribution jobs would exit Maryland — a bit silly. He does make one great point. The state legislature's efforts to raise the minimum wage in Maryland is out of step with the U.S. Congress. Is there any better reason to believe Maryland is moving in the correct direction?
