Remember how John Waters hitchhiked across the U.S. in the spring of 2012 -- part of the research, he said, for his next book?

Well, the long wait is finally (almost) over.

"Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America" is set to be released June 3 by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The book, Waters says, will be separated into three parts:

-- First, he ruminates over the best rides he could have had (sample from amazon.com's blurb: "a friendly drug dealer hands over piles of cash to finance films with no questions asked").

-- Then, it's the worst rides he could have had ("a Kansas vice squad entraps and throws him in jail").

-- In the third section, we finally hear about the ride he did have, which includes encounters with an 81-year-old farmer who's convinced he's a hobo, a rock band on tour and (in an encounter we wrote about in The Sun shortly after it happened) a 20-year-old Republican town councilman from Myersville in Frederick County.

Could this be the Waters version of John Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley?" We'll soon find out...
