'12 Years' a disappointment [Letter]

March 10, 2014

I watched "12 Years a Slave" recently and had been looking forward to this Oscar-winning film. What a travesty! Nothing but one-dimensional displays of blacks (submissive), Southern whites (amoral and cruel) and unrelenting brutality, degradation and abominations of every variety.

The star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, mumbled and stared, the costar, Lupita Nyong'o, screamed and writhed. And the rest of the cast shuffled, raged, sang work songs or practiced their pronunciations of the n-word and generally suffered, each in his or her own hellish world. Of what value is wallowing in human suffering?

At the end, the star happily reunites with his family. And that's it! It was like Walt Disney and Quentin Tarantino all rolled into one. Enjoy!
