Sun makes too much of race [Letter]

March 10, 2014

In reporting the personnel changes at the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport's fire and rescue department, why is it necessary to distinguish a terminated fire chief as African-American, a Hispanic as having been hired in his place and then an all-white class of recruits ("BWI terminates African-American fire chief amid complaints about diversity," March 6)?

I'm sure the class of recruits was open to all, meaning all races, colors and genders were free to join. I notice the article didn't mention how many male and female recruits were in the class. The article would have had the same effect had it simply read, "Terminated fire chief replaced."
