Maryland's largest national park gets left out [Letter]

March 07, 2014

We were pleased to see your recent report on visitation to Maryland's national parks ("Almost 7 million visit Maryland National Parks," March 4).

However, we were dismayed that the article overlooked the largest and most visited national park in Maryland: The C&O Canal National Historical Park.

In 2012, the C&O Canal hosted 4.7 million visitors and increased that number to over 5 million in 2013. Although a portion of our park lies in Washington, D.C., most of it is located in Maryland, and these sections host approximately 75 percent of our total yearly tourists.

We thank you for your attention to our national parks and hope you will include the C&O Canal National Historical Park in future reports.

Mike Nardolilli

The writer is president of the C&O Canal Trust.
