Harford County AARP Tax-Aide Program volunteers offer free preparation help

For the last month, Harford County AARP Tax-Aide Program volunteers have been preparing for free, federal and Maryland tax return forms for the 2013 tax year for middle and low income taxpayers, with special attention given to those 60 and older. It continues through Tax Day.

This popular community service program is administered by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS and the state of Maryland. It is staffed entirely by volunteers. Clients do not have to be AARP members.

Locally, the AARP Tax-Aide Program is supported by the Harford County Office on Aging. Tax preparation and electronic filing services are provided on various days in Aberdeen, Abingdon (new this year), Bel Air, Edgewood, Havre de Grace and Whiteford. Please note that the Abingdon location (St. Mary's Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 1 St. Mary's Church Road in Abingdon) replaces last year's site at Calvary Baptist Church for tax preparation on Wednesdays and Fridays. This new site is off Emmorton Road (Route 924), south of Wheel Road. Tax preparations can also be arranged for shut-ins and other people who cannot travel to one of the established sites.

Taxes will be prepared by appointment for personal returns only. This program will not prepare tax returns involving farms, businesses, rental properties or partnerships.

Appointments may be scheduled by calling 410-638-3425, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Because of the initial volume of calls when the lines first open, callers may experience difficulty getting through. If you can't get through at first, please be patient and persistent in calling back.

Clients are asked to bring their 2013 tax documents, their 2012 tax return as well as social security cards for all people claimed as dependents and at least one other form of identification.
