Loyola Md. loses to BU in Patriot League first round

Loyola Maryland sophomore Tiffany Padgett recorded her second double double of the season, but it was not enough as the 10th-seeded Greyhounds (5-25, 2-16) lost, 40-35, to seventh-seeded host Boston University (13-19, 7-11) in the first round of the Patriot League tournament Tuesday night. Loyola grabbed a season-best 54 rebounds, tied for fourth-most in program history. Jeneh Perry had a career-best 16 rebounds.

Maryland: Senior Alyssa Thomas was voted to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference first team for the third straight year and Lexie Brown was voted to the All-ACC freshman team. Thomas is the third player in Maryland history to earn All-ACC honors in each of her four years, following Crystal Langhorne and Marissa Coleman; she made the second team as the league's Freshman of the Year in 2010 and has been on the first team ever since as the conference's Player of the Year as a sophomore and junior. Brown is the 14th player in coach Brenda Frese's 12 seasons to make the freshman team. Thomas leads the Terps in scoring with 18.7 points per game, in rebounding with 10.8 rebounds per game and averages 4.3 assists per game along with Brown. Brown averages 9.8 points per game amd is second in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.1).

More honors: For the second straight season, Marymount senior guard Katelyn Fischer (Seton Keough) was named one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy, as announced by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The trophy is awarded to an outstanding Division III player who excels on the floor, in the classroom and in the community. ... McDaniel junior guard Steph Perez was named to the All-Centennial Conference first team. Johns Hopkins sophomore guard Katie Clark, Hopkins senior guard Fatu Conteh, Washington College senior forward Latisha Pledger and McDaniel senior guard Allie Eader received honorable mention. ... Saint Joseph's junior guard Natasha Cloud, a former Terp, was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year and made the All A-10 second team.

Former Loyola soccer star Stan Koziol dies at 48

Former Loyola College soccer great Stan Koziol, who also played briefly for the Blast in an eight-year professional career, died Monday morning after battling leukemia. He was 48. Koziol, a New Jersey native, enjoyed a stellar four-year career at Loyola, where he was a two-time All-American (1986-1987) and remains the program's all-time leader in assists. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1994. Koziol began his professional career playing outdoors for the American Soccer League's Maryland Bays in 1988 and, after a season with the Boston Bolts in the ASL, returned to Baltimore to play for the Blast in the 1989-90 season. "He was not only a father figure to me as my older brother, but also to his teammates and everyone around him," said his brother Joe Koziol, who played with him at Loyola and followed his path in the professional ranks. "Everyone always rallied around him."

Pittsburgh freshman Jamel Artis (Dunbar) made the All-ACC academic team. ... Loyola Maryland sophomore forward Franz Rassman made the Patriot League academic team. ... Baltimore City Community College (19-12) got 19 points from Xavier Richards and 17 from Kavon Pyatt (Edmondson) and held on for an 80-79 victory over Hagerstown Community College (13-17) on Sunday night to win its first National Junior College Athletic Association Region XX Division I championship. The Panthers will face Westchester CC in Valhalla, N.Y., on Saturday in the District 3 final. The winner will play in the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

Baseball: Maryland senior Jake Stinnett was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Pitcher of the Week after pitching the Terps' seventh no-hitter all-time, a 4-0 victory over Massachusetts. ... Maryland's game today against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond was postponed because of poor field conditions and will be made up May 6 at 6:30 p.m. ... Salisbury went 3-1 last week and moved up a spot, to No. 10, in the D3Baseball.com Top 25. ... Frostburg State junior infielder Ricky Castro and Salisbury junior pitcher Brett Collacchi were named Capital Athletic Conference Players of the Week. ... Navy junior pitcher Stephen Moore made the Patriot League honor roll.

Softball: UMBC junior catcher Taylor Hall and freshman Jessica Holte were named America East Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
