Police arrest two men on drug charges stemming from traffic stop

Anne Arundel County Police say a traffic stop in Gambrills early Wednesday resulted in the arrest of two men on drug-related charges.

Police said at about 12:18 a.m., an officer stopped a Dodge Magnum for speeding in the area of Route 3 south at Route 175. The license of the driver was suspended, the tags were suspended and there were open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, police said.

In addition, police said they found nine capsules of suspected heroin (2.52 grams), 21 capsules of suspected crack cocaine (29.20 grams), a bag of suspected crack cocaine (3.57 grams) and drug paraphernalia on the driver and in the vehicle.

The driver, Phillip Douglas Ponta, 24, of Bowie, was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, an open container of alcohol violation and driving with a suspended registration and on a suspended license.

A passenger, Elliott Johnson, 58, of Upper Marlboro, was charged with possession of cocaine and heroin, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of paraphernalia and for an open container of alcohol.
