Owings Mills-based The Great Cookie is hoping to sell cookies and cookie cakes nationally through a newly launched, redesigned website that expands the assortment and ability to customize cakes.

The company, founded in Ocean City in 1979, expects online shopping to play a big role in its national growth. It's also considering expanding locally beyond the seven stores it operates mostly in Baltimore-area malls.

Online customers can choose from more than 30 predesigned cookie cakes or customize a cake with a personalized message. Cookies, including snickerdoodles, chocolate chip, butter crunch, fudge chocolate chip and others,  also are sold in one- two- or three-pound tins.

"The new website is a reflection of where The Great Cookie is headed as a brand with a focus on growth," said Jason Fruman, president, in the company's announcement.

Besides its stores, The Great Cookie also operates two mobile cookie trucks, and the website will now allow customers to find those trucks.
