Despite having only one county champion (Chad Hertz at 152 pounds), Old Mill rode an early lead to the Anne Arundel County wrestling championship on Saturday at Meade.

The No. 10 Patriots finished with four runner-ups, and scored 187 team points to win the title, their first in four years. South River (174 ½ team points) was second and Southern (150 team points) finished third.

Broadneck, which had five individual champions, managed a fourth place finish.

“We didn’t have as many champions as we would have liked, but we wrestled as a team,” said Old Mill coach Jim Grim. “We brought 14 wrestlers here, and all 14 scored for us.

“I’m proud of these kids, and happy to bring the championship back to Old Mill. That was always our goal.”
