Nichols resigns as coach of Bohemians
Steve Nichols resigned as coach of the Baltimore Bohemians so he can devote full attention to his new job as men's coach at Loyola Maryland. In two seasons under Nichols, who last week stepped down as boys coach at McDonogh, the Bohs were 13-8-9 in regular-season play. He led the team to its first playoff berth last season, and the club's second-place finish qualified it for the 2014 U.S. Open Cup. The Bohs led the USL Premier Development League in scoring in 2013.
Horse racing: Maryland Jockey Club handicapper Keith Feustle has tabbed La Verdad as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the $300,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap on Saturday at Laurel Park. After finishing off the board in her debut, La Verdad has five straight front-running victories, four against optional claiming company at the New York tracks.
Men's college lacrosse: Junior midfielder Charlie McCormick scored all three of his goals in the second quarter as the Georgetown men's lacrosse team (1-0) earned a 10-4 victory over visiting Mount St. Mary's (0-2) on Wednesday. Clayton Wainer scored twice for the Mount, which trailed 6-2 at halftime.
Women's college lacrosse: Shannon Gilroy scored a game-high seven goals to power No. 4 Florida (1-1) to a 21-5 victory over visiting Jacksonville (0-2). ... No. 11 Notre Dame (1-0) took a 14-0 lead at halftime and won, 25-1, over visiting Cincinnati (0-1). Cortney Fortunato had four goals for the Fighting Irish.
Major League Lacrosse: CBS Sports Network will air 24 Major League Lacrosse games, up from 20 last season, including the MLL All-Star Game from Harvard Stadium, and the MLL semifinal and championship games. The first game of the season will be April 27 between the Rochester Rattlers and New York Lizards. The defending-champion Chesapeake Bayhawks are scheduled for seven games, the first May 10 against the Charlotte Hounds. Dave Ryan will again be the primary play-by-play man, with Evan Washburn providing color commentary.
Men's college basketball: The Colonial Athletic Association will host a viewing party Saturday at the Pratt Street Ale House at 4 p.m. when Towson plays William & Mary. The CAA tournament will be in Baltimore next month.
Youth sports: NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, who has 23 Sprint Cup victories, has joined the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. One of the first initiatives on which they will combine is construction of a youth development park in the Greensboro, N.C., area.
