Educational excellence requires paying teachers competitively [Letter]

In his commentary ("Md. education needs fundamental reform," Feb. 6), Mark Newgent attempted to demean the top ranking of Maryland Public Schools by Education Week. He revealed his lack of knowledge of the instructional process when he opined: "A three-year study of Thornton by an independent consultant found that 53 percent of the increased spending went not to the classroom but toward increased teacher salary and benefits."

What expenditures for the classroom could be more important than those used to recruit and retain competent teachers? Competitive salaries and benefits are indispensable to this process.
