Blast to induct Cabral into its Hall of Fame

Denison Cabral, the Blast's all-time scoring leader, will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame on Feb. 22 during halftime of a Major Indoor Soccer League game against the Syracuse Silver Knights. A five-time All-Star during his 13 seasons in Baltimore, he ranks first in franchise history in points (941), total goals (445), 2-point goals (284), 1-point goals (142), power-play goals (85), game-winning goals (32) and playoff scoring (81). Cabral was All-League five times, won five championships with the Blast and was the Most Valuable Player in the 2003 and 2008 championships. For the past eight years, he has been the president and director of coaching of the Denison Cabral Futsal Academy, where he works in Maryland with boys and girls from ages 4 to 19. "I am very honored and humbled to be voted into such an esteemed Hall of Fame next to some of the legends of the sport. ... That's amazing!" Cabral said. "I was blessed to have had the best years of my career spent in Baltimore, and it will always hold a special place in my heart."

Loyola women picked to win Patriot League lacrosse

Loyola Maryland senior midfielder Marlee Paton was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and the Greyhounds women's lacrosse team was picked to win the conference in a vote by the coaches. Loyola, which will be playing its first year in the league, topped the preseason poll with 127 points, garnering 15 of the 16 possible first-place votes. Navy was second with 113 points and three first-place votes. Navy junior goalie Annie Foky was voted the league's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to Paton and Foky, the All-Patriot League Preseason team includes Navy junior attacker Loren Generi, Loyola junior attacker Hannah Schmitt, Loyola junior attacker Annie Thomas, Loyola junior midfielder Taryn VanThof and Loyola sophomore defender Maddy Lesher.

Men's lacrosse: Senior attackman Matt Gregoire (South River), senior midfielder Phil Poe and junior midfielder Kevin McDonough were named captains at UMBC.

Baseball: Frostburg State senior outfielder Kevin Kean (Old Mill, Anne Arundel CC) was named to the d3baseball.com Preseason All-America team.

Football: Navy named Dan O'Brien an assistant outside linebackers coach. O'Brien will assist Justin Davis, who will be entering his eighth year with the Midshipmen and his fourth year coaching the outside linebackers. O'Brien spent the past three years at Elon as the defensive backs coach and four seasons before that as a defensive analyst and defensive graduate assistant at Alabama. O'Brien's father, Tom (Class of '71), was a three-year starter at defensive end for Navy and was an assistant coach for the Midshipmen from 1975 to 1981. ... Kevin Kelly has resigned as head coach after eight seasons at Georgetown to become defensive coordinator at Ball State. Rob Sgarlata, who most recently served as Hoyas assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, was named interim coach. Kelly was the 2011 Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Indoor track and field: UMES junior thrower Dillon Simon was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week.

Swimming and diving: Navy senior Ben Freedman and Towson senior Alex Cohen were named Eastern College Athletic Conference Men's Divers of the Week. ... Towson junior Lyndsey Dickson was named ECAC Women's Diver of the Week. ... UMBC seniors Tim Perkins and Johan Rohtla were named the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Diver of the Week and Swimmer of the Week, respectively. ... UMBC sophomore diver Corinna Darelius was named America East Diver of the Week.
