Fun, affordable pieces abound in new gallery-boutique in Ruxton

The concept behind the new Ruxton gallery and shop, V Fashion Towson/My Town Art Gallery, was born in the most unlikely of places: years ago, on the sidelines of a club lacrosse game.

Watching her now-grown daughters play lacrosse, Valerie Heneberry was struck by a desire to celebrate her fun, active lifestyle. She knew her husband, artist Patrick Reid O'Brien, was up for the job -- and that she could help.

O'Brien draws on his art education and a career in advertising to create Pop Art-inspired prints that celebrate that good life. The gallery side of the shop is an explosion of color; his bold, sunny prints take on much-loved local subjects, from lacrosse to crabs.

The boutique side of V Fashion -- run by Heneberry -- is jam-packed with accessories as colorful and bright as O'Brien's art. The constantly evolving collection of fun, trendy jewelry, scarves and handbags are sold at price points that are positively guilt-free. On one recent visit, we eyed Spartina scarves in vibrant patterns for $35 and Samoe Style handbags with their signature vertical zippered exterior pockets for $125 to $170.

"The pieces are on trend and won't break the bank," Heneberry explains.

As a child, Heneberry tagged along with her mother, an enthusiastic shopper who frequented the wholesale district of New York City. There, she developed a great eye for jewelry and accessories that are appealing and well made but reasonably priced.

For years, the couple has been selling their wares at shows and festivals all over the country; the Ruxton shop -- just minutes from their home -- is their first brick and mortar location.
