A Baltimore County Police officer shot a man who attacked him as he responded to a domestic dispute at a Cockeysville apartment complex, authorities said.

The 37-year-old man, who has not been identified, was conscious and breathing when he was taken to an area hospital. The officer was also hospitalized with injuries suffered in the altercation.

Police said they were called to the Hunt Club apartments in the 300 block of Wellingborough Way, where they found a man fighting with his stepfather. The younger man assaulted the officer as he attempted to break up the fight, police said. The officer attempted to retreat, then shot at the suspect.

"This officer did what he was trained to do, which is to mitigate a threat," said police spokeswoman Elise Armacost..

The stepfather was also hospitalized.
