Melo Trimble knew “something was up” when Bishop O’Connell boy’s basketball coach Joe Wootten had the team stay after practice Wednesday night to watch the McDonald’s All-American selection show on ESPNU.
“We’ve never watched that show,” Trimble said.
Trimble found out why Wootten, the son of legendary DeMatha coach Morgan Wootten, had the team watch. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound point guard is the first College Park-bound recruit to be named to the prestigious McDonald’s team since Mike Jones in 2003.
“I was surprised to hear that,” Trimble said about the 11-year drought of future Terps being named to the team. “I don’t feel any pressure. It does motivate me, but I’m not going to let it go to my head. I’m going to continue to work hard to become the player I think I can be.”
Ranked 37th in the country by ESPN coming into the season – the highest ranking of the four players in a class currently ranked 10th overall in the country – Trimble said that he has watched “just about all” of the Maryland games on television this season.
