No. 1 McDonogh wrestling defeats No. 3 John Carroll

McDonogh used its power-packed lineup to rally from a tie score with two matches left and defeat host and third-ranked John Carroll, 40-29, in a key Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference match.

The match was rescheduled due to last week's snow, and set up a week where the Eagles (14-3) will also wrestle No. 14 Spalding on Thursday and No. 2 Mount St. Joseph on Friday.

"Today you saw some of the hard work we've been putting in," McDonogh coach Pete Welch said.

The Eagles got pins from Myles Martin (at 182), Mike Smith (at 220), and Toby Hague (at 152).

One of the key matches of the night was at 132 pounds. With the Patriots leading 26-25, John Carroll's Andy Millner managed to get McDonogh's Riley Bakewell on his back in the first period for what seemed an eternity. Bakewell fought to stay alive and escaped the period. Even though Bakewell ended up on the wrong end of the decision (a 7-1 loss), he cost John Carroll points they sorely needed.

The match was tied at 29 entering the final two matches, but McDonogh had two aces up its sleeve, namely Cameron Harrell at 145 and Toby Hague at 152. Harrell is ranked second in the state at 145 by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, while Hague is ranked first at 152. Harrell contributed an 18-3 technical fall over Brian Chalmers, while Hague pinned Devin Darrington in 42 seconds to close out the match.

"It was an intense match," said McDonogh's Martin. "We got our lineup right, and we wrestled with a lot of emotion. Some of our smaller guys wrestled great matches and scored points. That was big for us."

John Carroll coach Keith Watson said the depth of the Eagles line-up was the difference.

"They're just good," Watson said. "We're not bad, but they are just good. I think we wrestled as hard as we could. It's all part of the game. I've always said we're a better tournament team than we are a dual meet team, and I think you'll see that going forward."
