What have Balto. County officials done to deserve a huge raise? [Letter]

January 28, 2014

When I first spotted the article on pay raises for the Baltimore County executive and County Council members, I thought there was no way citizens would allow that to happen ("Balto. Co. Council approves raises for council, executive," Jan. 22).

Well, I was wrong. I am beside myself over their voting themselves huge raises when we taxpayers are footing the bill.

Why do they deserve a 14 percent to 16 percent increase when they are only giving county workers a 2 percent or 3 percent cost-of-living increase in 2015? County workers haven't had a raise in eight years. I think no one would have blinked an eye if the council had given themselves the same increase their fellow county workers are getting in 2015.

Just two short years ago the county offered early retirement to workers when it needed to implement a reduction-in-force to save money. Council members must have saved a fortune if they can now vote themselves a huge raise for their part-time jobs.

I guess council members also figured they would offer bonuses to the workers in 2014, then in 2015 give them cost-of-living raises to soften the blow of them giving themselves a hefty raise.

Wake up, Baltimore County residents, this is your future.
