Delaney downplays governors race rumors

January 25, 2014|By John Fritze | The Baltimore Sun

Rep. John Delaney, the first term Potomac Democrat, downplayed recent talk that he is considering a run for governor, saying in a statement that his "expectation is that I will continue to serve in Congress."

"Many people I trust and respect have asked me to consider running for governor and of course I always think about where I may best serve," Delaney said in a statement. "But I love my job and my expectation is that I will continue to serve in Congress and represent my district."

A former banking executive who rose from political obscurity to gain an improbable win for Congress in 2012, Delaney had previously done little to quell the buzz generated by his repeated criticism of Gov. Martin O'Malley or the revelation that his name appeared alongside other gubernatorial candidates in a recent poll.
