A 22-year-old University of Maryland, College Park student was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver across from the campus early Friday morning, police said.

Cory Hubbard, of Westhampton Beach, N.Y., was crossing the southbound side of U.S. 1 at Knox Road about 1:30 Friday morning when a metallic blue sedan struck him, then left the scene of the accident, according to Prince George's County Police Cpl. Nathaniel Lewis.

Hubbard was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have released a photograph of the car continuing down U.S. 1 right after the accident occurred.

Wallace D. Loh, president of the University of Maryland, released a statement Friday morning expressing "deep sadness" and offering condolences to the family and friends of the student.

"In this time of loss, I ask that the entire Maryland family keep them in our thoughts and prayers," Loh said. He said the university is helping the investigation with its resources, including the University of Maryland Police Department.
