Firefighters from Howard County's Department of Fire and Rescue Services extinguished a fire in the duct system of a four-story office building in downtown Columbia early Friday morning.

According to a news release, units were dispatched to the 10400 block of Little Patuxent Parkway just before 6:30 a.m. to investigate an automatic fire alarm.

Units found smoke on the fourth floor of the building and fire in the exhaust duct system, according to the release. Firefighters believe the fire started on a lower level and the original fire was controlled by extinguishing the source. However, the fire traveled through the duct system, prompting the response.

Crews controlled the incident and remained on scene to make sure the fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.

Officials from HCDFRS and the Howard County Police Department are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Damage estimates are not available at this time, fire officials said.
