Drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants raise many questions [Letter]

January 10, 2014

I am confused over the plan to give drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants ("Thousands of immigrants seek drivers licenses," Dec. 31).

For instances, applicants must show they have paid taxes for the last two years. But since it is illegal for undocumented immigrants to work here, doesn't that mandate require them to break more laws in order to remain here?

Is there any process to see whether an undocumented immigrant has been employed using a stolen Social Security number or other form of identity theft?

Finally, if the names and addresses of the 13,000 undocumented immigrants eligible for licenses are known, will this information be passed on to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency?

Surely the employers who hired them will be fined or prosecuted?
