Breaking the silence about rape in the military [Letter]

December 19, 2013

Please accept my gratitude and congratulations for your enlightening report on male victims of sexual assault in the military ("Military sexual assault victims break the silence," Dec. 15). It was shocking, eye-opening and tragic to read about this abuse, which has remained hidden for so long.

The reporting was solid and comprehensive. The writing was crisp and compelling, and you did a beautiful job of blending the heart-rending stories of the individual victims with a sweeping overview of the problem.

The Sun's editors, headline writers, photographers, graphic artists and researcher also deserve to be commended for giving this story the impact it so richly deserves. The headline instantly caught my attention and made the story a must-read.

I urge The Sun to follow up on this report, and I hope other media outlets will write on the subject too. It is an important story that deserves to be read across the nation.
