McDonogh boys soccer coach Steve Nichols has been selected the 2013 Boys Private/Parochial School National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Nichols led the No. 1  Eagles (20-0-1) to the program's seventh Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference championship and its first unbeaten season.

McDonogh finished as the country's No. 1 team in the Students Sports Fab 50 Poll and No. 10 nationally in the NSCAA Adidas Poll.

"It was a special year with a good group of kids that really made it easy for me," Nichols said. "I've been around for a while, and for them to be able to top what we’ve done in the past, for this group to go undefeated and accomplish what they did, is very rewarding."

In 17 years coaching, Nichols' record is 290-62-31.

Nichols will be recognized at the NSCAA Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 17 in Philadelphia.
