Nine field hockey players named all-region

Nine players from Baltimore-area schools, including three from Class 4A state champion Severna Park, have been named all-Mid-Atlantic region by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Local players included defender Maeve Doherty, midfielder Jessica Valvano and goalie Liz Mata of Severna Park, midfielder Sabrina Rhodes of Class 3A champion C. Milton Wright, forward Erin Shanahan of Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference champion Archbishop Spalding, midfielder Linnea Gonzales of Class 1A runner-up Patterson Mill, goalie Kelly Johnson of Glenelg Country, defender Rachel Park of Bryn Mawr and midfielder Morgan Philie of Glenelg.

All told, 14 players from Maryland and Delaware made the team.

The organization's all-American teams will be announced Monday.
