Why mention ethnic origin of suspects? [Letter]

December 14, 2013

In a recent article regarding cigarette smuggling and illegal drug imports in Pikesville, the accused are identified as persons "of Azerbaijani descent" ("Raid targets pharmacy, restaurant Dec. 12). Of what bearing does this identification have upon the activities of the accused?

Is this a new policy of The Sun to identify persons accused of criminal acts by their ethnic origins? Will The Sun also identify persons of Anglo-Saxon, French, German, etc. descent, or is such identification reserved only for Eastern Europeans, Asians, Africans, etc.? If the standards for your reporters permit such identifications, they require immediate review and correction.
