Forecasters call for snow and rain again over the weekend

After snow, sleet and freezing rain earlier this week, the National Weather Service said snow and other wintry precipitation is likely again on Saturday and Sunday.

It is expected to be sunny but cold in the Baltimore area on Thursday, with high temperatures hovering around freezing and strong northwest breezes at around 10 to 14 miles per hour, NWS said. Winds will slow overnight Thursday and temperatures will drop to about 26 degrees.

It will be somewhat warmer on Friday, with forecasters predicting a high temperature of 40 degrees and a low around freezing.

Saturday could bring another brush with wintry precipitation, though it's looking unlikely it will be a major event.

The weather service is forecasting a chance for snow, possibly mixed with rain, Saturday morning and early afternoon. It is eventually forecast to transition to just rain, with temperatures well above freezing at around 40 degrees.

The weather service is calling for a slight chance of snow accumulations in the fractions of an inch along the Interstate 95 corridor before rain begins. Those chances are higher northwest of Baltimore, with 60-70 percent chances of an inch of snow in Carroll and northern Baltimore counties.

Local meteorologist "Eric the Red" calls it a classic situation of warm, moist air coming up from the south and moving in on top of colder, denser air over the region.

"This typically gets us some snow or sleet at the onset, and ultimately it changes to freezing rain and rain," Eric wrote in an e-mail.'s Henry Margusity predicts it will be a major event to our north. Snow is forecast from Missouri into New England, but for the southern edge, across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, rain is expected to mix in.

Rain and snow are very likely to continue overnight Saturday, when the low temperature will be a few degrees above freezing, into Sunday before stopping at about 8 a.m., NWS said. Highs on Sunday will again be around 40 degrees.
